This is a full-time position 80-100% (32-40 hours a week) that will start in the summer of 2018 and end in May 2019. The Learning about Open Response science test items and English Learners (LOREL) project and the Dynamic Mathematics for English Language Learners (DMELL) projects are based at TERC and involve researchers from a number of other institutions. The goal of the LOREL project is to investigate the reading, writing, and STE demands of the open response test items on the state Science and Technology, Engineering (STE) test in Massachusetts and the effects of these demands on the performance of Grade 5 English Language Learners (ELLs). The goal of the DMEL project is to explore how ELLs use mathematics education software to engage in Common Core State Standards mathematical practices and to share with the research community design principles for using such software with ELLs.
The work of the project will take place within two highly collaborative teams. The successful candidate is expected to take a significant role in a wide range of tasks, to be highly self-motivated, and to work well both collaboratively and independently.
