C is a programming language designed by Microsoft. It combines the functionality of C and C++ with Visual Basic. C is used on many operating systems, not just Windows. C is one of the languages used in the Microsoft framework. While C++ supports both object-oriented programming and procedural programming, C is strictly an object-oriented programming language. The name C was inspired by musical notation where a sharp indicates that the note should be made a semitone higher in pitch. The sharp symbol also resembles the combination of four plus symbols to suggest that the language is an increment of C++.

Objective-C is also derived from C and has been adapted by Apple to develop applications for the Mac OS and iOS operating systems. Objective-C has therefore become very popular for mobile phone apps. The name Objective-C was chosen to make it clear that this was an object-oriented language with its origins in the C language.

One of the earliest manuals for Perl featured a camel on the front. This became known as the Camel Book and since then, the camel has been the symbol of Perl. The name Python is not related to a snake family, but instead is a reference to the TV series Monty Pythons Flying Circus. As a result, you will find Monty Python references in example code in Pythons manuals. The scripting language Ruby is strongly influenced by Perl. Ruby was named after the birthstone for one of the colleagues of the original developer, and ruby as a birthstone (July) comes right after pearl (June).

The name Fortran is derived from the Mathematical Formula Translating System. The cover of one its oldest manuals is often used as its logo.
There are many other languages. Some of the more widely used are briefly mentioned here. COBOL is one of the oldest programming languages. The acronym stands for Common Business Oriented Language. It is still in widespread use in mainframe systems, in particular in financial organizations and government agencies. As one of the earliest programming languages that is still in use, COBOL is considered by some to be a dinosaur language. As a result, a dinosaur is sometimes used as its logo.
